How to Measure Baking Ingredients

Knowing how to measure ingredients properly is very important when baking.

There is a difference between weight and volume measure and it's important to understand which is the most accurate.

For consistent results, weighing your ingredients is the best practice. A good kitchen scale is worth the investment.

If you don't have a scale, use measuring cups for dry ingredients. Overfill the cup then “sweep” away the excess so the ingredient is level.

How much does a cup of flour weigh? The weight of a cup of flour will vary based on how the cup is filled. It can range from 4 to 5 ounces.

To measure liquids, use a measuring cup made from glass or plastic with measurements listed on the side.

To measure liquid ingredients view the cup from eye level with the cup sitting on a flat surface.

Use standard measuring spoons. A “teaspoon” measure is not the same as the spoon you use for stirring your cup of tea.
